W P A Cemetery Maps

During the Great Depression of the 1930s the Federal Government, utilizing FDR's New Deal recovery programs created the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The WPA was established on May 6, 1935 by Executive order of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. One of the projects was the Cemetery Transcription Project. Eventually the program expanded and each burial was recorded on index cards and in Ohio and several other states a plat map of each cemetery was created. Veteran graves were marked with a simple coffin like mark ( ), usually with the grave number. A list showing the cemetery section, lot number, grave number and the veteran's name along with a number indicating the war in which he served can be found on each map. A map legend gives the following information: 1 - Revolutionary War; 10 - War of 1812; 16 - Mexican War; 19 - Civil War; 25 - Spanish Am. War; 31 - World War. When using these maps it is necessary to remember that they were created before World War II. The Union County WPA maps are kept at the office of the Union County Engineer, and it was their generosity that allows us to present the maps here.
